PPS is an independent senior school located in the heart of central London. We believe that exceptional teaching, combined with a modern curriculum inside and outside the classroom, provides the best stimulus for children to become inquisitive, open-minded and creative learners and achieve beyond exams. Portland Place School is a leading independent co-educational day school for children aged 10-16, located directly in the heart of the City of Westminster. It was founded with a particular purpose in mind: to be an alternative to the intense, large, examination focused independent day schools of which there are many in London.
The school ethos is to be small, nurturing and inspirational, encouraging and enabling our pupils to achieve their very best academically, with space to develop and express their creativity and athleticism.
With a high record of an overall 92% pass rate at Grades 9-4, The Good Schools Guide describes us as ‘small, nurturing and refreshingly relaxed. A haven of creativity in the pushy, academically competitive world of London day schools. A place for engaged, lively kids.’
You can visit the school on one of our morning tours, or simply make an appointment to see the school and Headmaster at a time and date convenient to you.
Portland Place School is part of the Alpha Plus Group of Schools.
Portland Place School does offer scholarships in Art, Drama, Music and Sport from entry in Year 7. These are for students who show significant ability, beyond the norm for their age, in those areas. Details on the awarding of scholarships and assessment process are available from the Admissions Registrar.
Portland Place School is committed to broadening access to the school by offering to eligible parents/guardians means-tested financial support with the payment of schools fees. Such support is known as a Bursary and these may be awarded in the form of a discount of between 10% and 50% on tuition fees payable, depending on the financial, compassionate or other pertinent circumstances of applicants.
Bursary awards are subject to repeat testing of parental means each year and may be varied upwards or downwards, depending on parental circumstances. Awards are made on the basis of the Portland Place School Scale of Awards, which sets out award levels in relation to a family’s financial circumstances. The Scale of Awards is reviewed and revised annually by the Bursar to reflect any changes in fee costs, and approved by the Headmaster and Director of Schools. Though awards are generally tied to this scale, they may be varied upwards or downwards depending on individual parents’/guardians’ circumstances (e.g. their savings, investments and realisable assets, as well as their income, the size of their family, any other persons dependent upon them and like factors), compassionate or other pertinent considerations.
Requests for financial support will be considered for existing pupils where a change in parents’/guardians’ circumstances has resulted in difficulty in meeting tuition fees and may result in the child being withdrawn part way through a stage of education.
