VAT and girls' schools: 'It is extremely important to us that their experience is reflected in this legal challenge'

Lawyers will argue in this week's High Court challenge that single-sex independent schools provide a safe haven for girls who have struggled in mixed-sex settings.

Quoted in The Times, Ms Robinson said: “Parents choose girls' schools for a variety of reasons and it is vital that, where a local independent school is the sole girls-only option, VAT on fees does not remove that choice for them.

“Girls’ schools play an important role in discussing and tackling important societal issues such as rape culture and violence against women and girls. Many young women with personal experience in this area have been able to thrive thanks to their experience at an independent girls’ school.

“It is extremely important to us that their experience is reflected in this legal challenge. It is also important that this unprecedented education tax’s compatibility with human rights law is tested.”
