This year’s A-level exam results from 33,466 candidates at 483 Independent Schools Council (ISC) schools show that 18.17% of entries from ISC pupils were awarded the new grade A* designed to reward the top academic achievers.
This year’s A-level exam results from 33,466 candidates at 483 Independent Schools Council (ISC) schools show that 18.17% of entries from ISC pupils were awarded the new grade A* designed to reward the top academic achievers. This compares to a national average of 8.1%.
The proportion of entries from ISC pupils achieving at least an A grade was 52.03%, an increase of 0.08 percentage points on 2009; nationally 27.0% of entries were awarded at least an A, an increase of 0.3 percentage points.
Preliminary findings show that 6.30% of ISC candidates (2,108 pupils) were awarded three or more A* grades.
In addition, ISC’s data shows that the A* grade has not been distributed in the same way among girls and boys at ISC schools. While an entry from a girl is more likely to achieve an A* (19.03% for girls compared to 17.34% for boys), boys are more likely to achieve 3 A*s or better (6.79% for boys compared to 5.80% for girls).

At GCE A-level:
33,466 pupils, representing 95.21% of the Year 13 ISC cohort, at 483 schools, took at least one A-level; 99.25% [2009: 99.32 %] of all entries (106,627 out of 107,435) received pass (A-E) grades (national average 97.6% [2009 97.5 %]); 18.17% of entries (19,525) were awarded the top A grade (national average 8.1%); 52.03% [2009: 51.95 %] of entries (55,901) were graded A* or A (national average 27.0% [2009 26.7 %]).
Pupils at ISC schools take a range of different qualifications. This year ISC has published results from a total of 495 schools, revealing information relating to the following qualifications:
Pre-U:
552 pupils (1.57% of the Year 13 ISC cohort), at 23 schools, took at least one Pre-U. Between them, they took a total of 744 Pre-Us.
International Baccalaureate (IB): ##
1,485 pupils (4.22% of the Year 13 ISC cohort), at 43 schools, took the IB.
BTEC:
192 pupils (0.55% of the Year 13 ISC cohort), at 22 schools, took at least one BTEC.
Extended Project Qualification (EPQ):
854 pupils (2.43% of the Year 13 ISC cohort), at 102 schools, took the EPQ.
Commenting on the high proportion of A grades (8.1% nationally, 18.17% at ISC schools), ISC Chairman, Dame Judith Mayhew Jonas, said:*
"I am delighted for all our pupils who have worked so hard to achieve these outstanding results. The grades also reflect the excellent teaching and commitment of staff and parents. There has been some anxiety across the profession about the new A* grades, with some of the top universities now insisting on them as part of their entry criteria, but it is pleasing to see so many pupils achieving this top grade."

For the 11th year, ISC provides the following data on the achievements of upper sixth formers (Year 13), including their grades in AS-level examinations not taken at full A level, and, in some schools, the Pre-U, International Baccalaureate (IB), BTEC and the Extended Project Qualification. This year for the first time, we are presenting the data for both Applied and non-Applied subjects at A- and AS-level in aggregate form.
The ISC list includes no aggregation of grade information into UCAS points.
