Julie Robinson, chief executive of the ISC, has highlighted the resilience and adaptability shown by independent schools amid the "seismic change" of the last 18 months.

In an article for Independent School Management Plus, Ms Robinson says the government's VAT on fees policy "has lit a fire, inspiring schools to take bold choices and focus on their distinctive features, revitalising their offerings in a more competitive market".

Despite the increased financial pressures they have faced since January 2025, she praises independent schools for continuing to offer an excellent and well-rounded education that is recognised by an international audience.

In addition to academic achievement, Ms Robinson explains that independent schools place a significant focus on character education, building the soft skills of pupils in and out of the classroom, and prioritising local community action through mutually beneficial partnerships with the state sector.

"A culture of service and civic responsibility is embedded in the independent sector," writes Ms Robinson, "which means students have plenty of opportunities to support their wider communities."
