ISC chief executive Julie Robinson has responded to new analysis forecasting the impact of VAT on the overall cost of independent education.

According to Weatherbys Private Bank, the total cost of sending a child to independent school from the age of five to 18 could reach £377,000. This assumes annual inflation of three per cent and includes the added cost of VAT on fees.

Ms Robinson commented: “Schools will always do all they can to keep fees affordable for parents. A third of pupils at ISC schools receive some sort of fee assistance, and the amount spent on bursaries is at an all-time high. However, the government’s decision to tax education will inevitably have an impact on cost, with a cumulative effect over several years.”
