My experience working at ISC
Aiden, a sixth form student from Harris Academy Falconwood, shares some highlights from his week of work experience at ISC.
I was at ISC for one week for work experience and I can honestly say it was one of the best weeks of my life. Now I know that when you think of work you just think of writing up reports, attending meetings and being swamped by tasks. But it wasn’t like that here, all the members of staff made me feel extremely welcome and treated me like a colleague instead of like a student.
I have learnt that ISC is not just independent schools and protecting them, it is also about standing up for them, making sure that these schools are treated fairly and making sure the government doesn’t diminish these schools’ abilities.
In my week here I did a lot of things, one of the first being to write up a briefing on the Adjournment debate on the Regulation of Proprietors of Independent Schools. This was intriguing as I had to do the research myself and take the parts I needed instead of just copying and summarising information already pre-made for me. Also, I had to write up a summary of the meeting that I attended and while that may seem boring, it was extremely interesting as I had to keep track of who was speaking and the key points they were making. I have also had some chats with some of the team members here at ISC and I have been able to learn so much from financing and payslips, to the role of a EA and even how the blogs and social media posts are written and made.
My time here has allowed me to develop many skills that will help me for all my future endeavours such as better meeting skills, research and analysis skills and being able to successfully work in an office environment.
Overall, if I had the opportunity I would come back here and I recommend anyone else who is looking to get in a field like this to come and do their work experience here as this has been one of the best weeks of my life.
