The John Lyon School
John Lyon is an academically selective independent day school, based in Harrow-on-the-Hill in North West London. 2021-2022 marks the beginning of coeducation at John Lyon, with girls joining the School for the first time in our 145-year history. We also now offer an all-through education from Nursery, aged 2½ to A-Level, aged 18, thanks to our coming together with Quainton Hall School in central Harrow, which now becomes John Lyon’s prep school.

John Lyon is a leading North West London independent boys’ school, based in the picturesque Harrow-on-the-Hill.
Academic excellence is at the very heart of what the School achieves for the 600 boys who study here. We give pupils a good grounding in all the major academic subjects. Dedicated teachers work to develop learning skills, creativity and the ability to apply in all areas of life. Building on this platform, our boys perform well from the point they join us – whether at age 11, 13 or 16 – and achieve excellent results in public examinations at GCSE and A-Level. Most students gain places at leading UK universities and then move on into the workplace in a huge and varied range of valued professions.
A John Lyon boy also gains from his time outside the classroom. In particular, we have a strong and growing reputation for the strength of our Music, Art, Drama and sport. Add to this an exciting Co-Curricular Programme focusing on each boy’s sense of community, achievement and wellbeing, a range of more than 70 extra-curricular activities from astronomy to R&B, and pastoral care that is second to none, you have a school designed to nurture high-achieving and happy boys for their time with us and well beyond.
Pupils typically join John Lyon in Years 7, 9 and 12, largely from a North West London catchment area including Harrow, Wembley, Stanmore, Pinner, Watford, Rickmansworth, Northwood, Ruislip, Hillingdon, Uxbridge, Ickenham, Northolt, Southall, Ealing, Acton, Edgware, Brent Cross, Finchley, Barnet, Camden, Westminster, Kensington & Chelsea, Hammersmith & Fulham, as well as other parts of Middlesex, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire.
John Lyon is committed to widening access for local families, enabling the children of those who could not otherwise afford the fees to benefit from our all-round independent school education in North West London. This corresponds to the original intention of John Lyon, who, when he founded Harrow School in 1572, stated that he wished to provide an education for children in the parish. Each year, the School makes available a small number of means-tested bursaries to pupils who demonstrate exceptional talent and potential.
All pupils who take the 11+ or 13+ examination in January will be considered for an Academic Scholarship. Their performance in the examination, their school reference and their interview will all be taken into consideration. Sixth Form Scholarships are awarded dependent on GCSE results.
We also award a small number of Scholarships to candidates of outstanding ability and potential in Drama, Music, Art, STEAM and Sport. Separate applications are required for these awards and assessments are held at the end of November.
Scholarships normally provide for 5% of tuition fees each year. They are reviewed annually.
