'Are boys' schools a thing of the past?'

Writing in The Spectator, Dr Andrew Cunningham explores the reasons behind a number of boys' schools turning, or planning to turn, fully co-educational. Dr Cunningham points to the rising number of households in which both parents work, as evidenced by research by the Independent Schools Council (ISC), as one reason why parents are seeking the flexibility offered by co-educational schools. Dr Andrew Cunningham is a former GCSE examiner and has taught English at Bradfield College, Charterhouse, Radley College and North London Collegiate School.

A closer look at the forthcoming KCSIE guidance

Urging schools to prepare ahead of the autumn, Mr Ramsden says: "It is important that all teachers are fully aware of how these systems work, and schools should make sure that this is part of their start-of-year safeguarding training in September." Families face hike in school dinner prices as headteachers struggle to subsidise costs

Families could soon have to pay more for school lunches as headteachers struggle to find funds from their own budgets to protect prices from food inflation. Speaking to iNews, headteachers in England said they have been using their own school resources to keep the cost of school meals down to as little at £2.20 and that if they didn’t, the real cost would be more than a third more. By Callum Mason, iNews.

The Independent Schools Council (ISC) monitors the national and educational press in order to keep independent schools up-to-date with relevant education news. The DNS is a service primarily for schools in membership of ISC associations, although other interested parties can choose to sign-up. We endeavour to include relevant news and commentary and, wherever possible, notable public letters. Where capacity allows, we may include links to ISC blogs, press statements and information about school or association events. News stories are selected based on their relevance to the independent sector as a whole. Editorial control of the DNS remains solely with the ISC.

Sign-up to the email service is available on our website.

Members can contact the ISC if they know in advance of news, letters or opinions that are likely to feature in the media, or are aware of existing coverage which they would like to see featured in the DNS.

Headlines and first-line summaries are written by the ISC with the link directing to the source material. You should read and comply with the terms and conditions of the websites to which we link.
