Historic abuse

DfE take the view that an allegation is not ‘historic’ if it is made against a member of staff still in the workforce. Also see updates on Safeguarding Guidance and Behaviour and Discipline in Schools Advice.

Historic Abuse

DfE take the view that an allegation is not ‘historic’ if it is made against a member of staff still in the workforce. All such allegations should therefore be handled in accordance with the statutory guidance on dealing with allegations of abuse and a referral to a LADO, preferably where the staff member currently works or, if that is not possible, where they formerly worked should be made.

Safeguarding Guidance

DfE has informed ISC that the new guidance (which is due to be published in the next couple of months) will not be implemented until September 2014. Schools should therefore continue to follow the ‘Safeguarding Children and Safer Recruitment’ guidance for the time being.

Behaviour and Discipline in Schools Advice updated

DfE has published an updated version of the Behaviour and Discipline departmental advice for school leaders and staff. The advice applies to all schools and explains the powers members of staff have to discipline pupils. It is however for individual schools to develop their own best practice for managing behaviour in their school.
