School Information

Eastbourne College is stunningly situated on the edge of Eastbourne, metres from the sea and the glorious South Downs. Pupils can flourish in this wonderful setting with access to a safe town centre that allows them to become more independent but without the concerns or restrictions of isolated rural or urban schools. With over 630 pupils in the school, Eastbourne College is very much a community rather than an institution, where every child is known extremely well known and valued by their housemaster or housemistress, the Headmaster and all the staff. Boys and girls, brothers and sisters, day pupils and boarders are totally involved in a school that believes wholeheartedly in full co-education, full boarding and the nurturing of individuals for the full five years that make up their senior school days, from the ages of 13 to 18. It is a selective but not highly selective school whose pupils tend to come from within 90 minutes of the College and whose parents are deeply involved in the life of this dynamic school where recent A level and GCSE results broke all previous records. The College’s seven-day-a-week boarding provision was highlighted in its recent ISI Inspection report: ‘The school gives its pupils an excellent range and quality of education. It succeeds in offering a full boarding experience to all it pupils, boarding and day.’ The inspectors also noted the value of the extended day and identified the College’s distinctive co-curricular programme as one of the outstanding features of the school: ‘The school succeeds in providing a coherent and excellent co-educational boarding experience for boys and girls, boarders and day pupils. Eastbourne College is a happy and inspiring community that successfully emphasises the key values for which it stands.’ (ISI Inspection – Eastbourne College 2008) The charities of Eastbourne College and St Andrew’s School recently amalgamated guaranteeing the long term future of top quality independent education for children aged 2-18 in Eastbourne and beyond. The two schools continue to operate independently with each benefitting from shared expertise and resources. The Birley Centre, due for completion in July 2011, is one such resource. Part of the College’s exciting development programme, it will provide a first rate facility with an auditorium, exhibition space and a state-of-the-art home for the teaching, performance and recording of music. Completing the cultural quarter of Eastbourne, the Birley Centre will also be a valuable asset for the town itself.
