School Information

The Read School is pleasantly situated in the rural village of Drax, with very convenient road access (M62, M18, A1). The school operates seven transport routes bringing local children in from the residential areas around Selby, Goole, Howden, up from Doncaster, Hatfield and Thorne, and from Monk Fryston and Sherburn in Elmet in the west. The School was the focal point for the education of boys in the Selby-Goole area for over 340 years, first as Drax Grammar School, and (since 1967) as The Read School. It is now a coeducational boarding and day school, offering a wide range of academic studies at GCSE and ‘A’ Level, together with a full programme of sports, drama, music, CCF and adventurous activity. High standards are expected in all aspects of endeavour, and in behaviour and manners. The school welcomes children of all abilities and able boys and girls – achieving high grades in public examinations – work alongside children of more modest abilities. Classes are small – typically 14-16 pupils. The school has a definite boarding ethos, with the normal day running from 8.50 am – 3.40 pm. Thereafter the children are expected to take part in the activity programme between 4.00 pm and 5.00 pm. Those not involved in activities on a particular day go into supervised homework sessions. Day pupils are encouraged to be involved in the activity and weekend programmes. Since the turn of the century we have seen the addition of the Shipley building, providing a superb new Music room and two practice rooms, plus two well-equipped rooms for teaching mathematics; additional changing rooms and washroom facilities; extended and improved dining room and kitchen area; a Multi Use Games Area with Astroturf; continual upgrading of the ICT facilities (website – www.readschool.co.uk) ; refurbishment of the science laboratories; refurbishment of Norfolk House (Junior boys’ boarding) and School House (Senior boarding); a new Sixth Form Centre for both study and relaxation and a new Creative Arts Centre providing excellent new facilities for Art, Design Technology, Textiles and Food Technology. The Lower Junior School and the girls’ boarding accommodation are situated on their own site in the village at Adamson House. The school has excellent playing fields. Open Mornings are held twice a year, but visitors are welcome at any time by appointment. If you are considering an independent education for your child Read is well worth a visit.
