ISC Annual Census 2009

This report is based on a survey carried out in January 2009. All 1,265 schools in the UK membership of the constituent associations of ISC completed the survey. In addition, two schools from the Republic of Ireland completed the survey and are included in our tables where appropriate. All information refers to January 2009, except for capital expenditure on buildings and equipment, which relates to the financial year ending at various dates in 2008.

We have continued to use the revised method for calculating average fees, which provides more accurate figures. Average fees based on the old method, however, continue to be reported to allow comparisons with data prior to 2007.

Appendix One reflects all ISC schools that provided answers to the 2009 Census. Appendix Two refers to schools which completed the Census in both 2008 and 2009 and therefore allows for valid comparisons.

ISC constituent associations are: the Association of Governing Bodies of Independent Schools (AGBIS), the Girls' Schools Association (GSA), the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference (HMC), the Society of Headmasters and Headmistresses of Independent Schools (SHMIS), The Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS), the Independent Schools Association (ISA), the Independent Schools' Bursars Association (ISBA) and the Council of British International Schools (COBIS).

The data contained in this report does not include that of COBIS schools because of the difficulties in comparing UK and international schools' data.
