By suggesting that universities are admitting too many independently-educated pupils and not enough candidates from poorer backgrounds, Alan Milburn crudely equates private education with social class ('Universities admitting too many private school pupils, says Alan Milburn,' January 25). In fact, the social make–up of independent schools is far more complex than many realise.

Sir, While I greatly admire Lord Adonis’s contribution to educational reform and raising attainment levels in the state school sector, I fear he is wide of the mark in suggesting that independent schools are failing in what he sees as a responsibility to help to improve state schools (“Independent schools are too cowardly to do their duty and run academies, says Adonis”, Jan 18).

While we have some sympathy with Michael Gove's intentions to introduce a core of subjects to be achieved at GCSE ('GCSE league tables: thousands of pupils failing in key subjects', January 8) the devil is in the detail, and unfortunately this initiative shows signs of being rushed.
