Independent schools welcome updating of charity law

23 November 2004

The Independent Schools Council today issued the following statement in response to the announcement in the Queen's Speech that charity law was to be modernised.

The Independent Schools Council welcomes the proposed updating of charity law, announced in the Queen's Speech. The great majority of our member schools are charities and we are confident that they will be able to demonstrate conclusively the immense public benefit they contribute, by saving the public purse some £2bn annually in educating 450,000 children at no expense to the state, by the taxes they themselves pay, by sharing their facilities with the community and by widening access to lower income families.
