ISC welcomes recommendations of Lamb review into special educational needs

ISC welcomes and endorses the recommendations of Brian Lamb's review into special educational needs and parental confidence. Provision for children with disabilities and special educational needs is a crucial part of the work of all schools, and ISC schools would welcome the chance to work more closely with local authorities to meet the needs of pupils, and are well placed to support pupils with a range of disabilities and/or special educational needs.

14% of British population attended independent school, survey finds

A survey of British adults for the Independent Schools Council (ISC) has found that twice as many adults have experienced an independent education than previously thought. Of the 1,001 respondents, 14% said that they had attended an independent school for at least part of their education. This is twice that of the oft-cited figure of 7% representing the proportion of school children who currently attend independent schools.

ISC welcomes the Prime Minister’s review of Tier 4 visas and calls for a more proportionate immigration approach for schools and school children

The Independent Schools Council (ISC) welcomes the Prime Minister’s announcement this morning of a review of Tier 4 of the Points Based System of immigration. It notes with concern however that Mr Brown does not mention the application of the scheme to overseas pupils in UK schools and calls on the Home Office, the UK Border Agency and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills to reconsider the application of Tier 4 to independent schools and school children.

ISC welcomes quality mark for British education overseas

ISC welcomes the DCSF announcement at the COBIS Conference in Madrid on 30th October to establish standards for British schools overseas and a mechanism under which they can be inspected. We hope that official recognition of a high standard of British education overseas will be an attractive and beneficial mark of quality, and that many schools will decide to sign up to the process.

Fifth annual rise for ISC GCSE and IGCSE results

GCSE and IGCSE exam results from 555 Independent Schools Council (ISC) schools show that this year 28.9% of entries achieved grade A*. This is the fifth consecutive yearly rise. Moreover, 59.8% entries were graded A* or A.

New chairman for SHMIS

Success for ISC pupils at A-level

A-level exam results from 466 Independent Schools Council (ISC) schools show that this year 52.3% of entries from ISC pupils were awarded grade A. The grade A improvement from ISC pupils on 2008 (1.6 percentage points) was twice that of pupils nationally (0.8 percentage points).
