ISC welcomes recommendations of Lamb review into special educational needs

17 February 2012

ISC welcomes and endorses the recommendations of Brian Lamb's review into special educational needs and parental confidence. Provision for children with disabilities and special educational needs is a crucial part of the work of all schools, and ISC schools would welcome the chance to work more closely with local authorities to meet the needs of pupils, and are well placed to support pupils with a range of disabilities and/or special educational needs. We can often offer smaller classes where staff can readily observe how each child is performing, and some of our schools are able to provide specialist teaching support. Some have specialist therapists and educational psychologists visiting regularly, and others have well-resourced specialist units.

Within ISC there are also some specialist schools which cater exclusively for pupils with specified types of disability. An issue remains, however, as to how provision for special educational needs and disabilities is to be funded for pupils in independent schools, and we would therefore welcome greater clarity from the Government on this point.
