ISC welcomes findings of Early Years Foundation Stage review

30 March 2011

The Independent Schools Council welcomes Dame Clare Tickell’s recommendation in her review of the Early Years Foundation Stage for a reduction in bureaucracy. It is much overdue.

Dame Clare’s proposed slimming of the early learning goals from 69 to 17, and the Profile tick-boxes from 117 to 20, strikes a balance between protecting the most vulnerable children and freeing practitioners from needless paperwork.

ISC Chief Executive David Lyscom said: "I am particularly delighted that Dame Clare has expressly recognised the "consistently higher quality" of independent schools, a fact verified by inspection.

"Her recommendation that exemptions be widened to schools in professional organisations will be warmly welcomed by schools in membership of ISC associations. Not only do our schools demonstrate their high quality in ISI inspections, but their heads, bursars and governors also have the support of the ISC’s member associations in striving for excellence.

"ISC looks forward to working with Dame Clare and the DfE team to make these proposals a reality."
