Pay & Benefits

Terms and conditions of service vary throughout the independent sector, depending on school size, location and type.

Pay
Teachers' salaries are competitive. Most ISC associations expect member schools to use the main national salary scale as a minimum. Many schools enhance this by adding an agreed percentage. Larger schools often have their own pay scales, which are likely to improve significantly the rewards to teachers.

Pensions
Teachers in the vast majority of ISC schools are members of the Teachers' Pension Scheme (TPS). The TPS is the 2nd largest Public Sector Pension Scheme in England & Wales with over 1.4 million members. The terms for independent school teachers in the TPS are the same as for teachers in maintained schools, so that there are no difficulties in transferring between the maintained and independent sectors.

Working Hours & Holidays
Many independent schools have a longer working day, but the holidays are also significantly longer.

Other Benefits
The benefits made available to staff vary greatly, but may include the provision of free or subsidised accommodation (mainly, but not exclusively in boarding schools), fee remission for your children's education, private medical insurance, access for the family to school facilities such as swimming pools, squash and tennis courts, and free meals.
