The Head
The head and, in boarding schools, the housemaster or housemistress are the key members of staff in the school. You should feel completely confident about the people responsible for looking after your child, so make sure you meet them. The management skills and personal qualities of the head and house staff play a vital part in determining the unique atmosphere of each school.
Do not expect heads to be super-salesmen or saleswomen. They have been trained to teach children rather than to 'sell' their school. What they must do is convince you that they will really care for your children. Warm to the head who expresses an interest in your child, explains why his or her school could be the right one and is prepared to answer your questions fully and frankly. Take the opportunity to mention any special concerns you have or any matters which particularly interest your child. Try to observe how pupils react to the head - do they acknowledge him or her or look the other way? Is there warmth as well as respect?
Always bear in mind that the head may not be there throughout your child's school career; so do not choose the school on the sole basis of liking him or her.
