Teaching Staff & Teacher/Pupil Ratio
In 2008, there were 46,160 full time teachers in ISC schools and 15,188 part time teachers who worked 225,126 hours.
This led to another fall in the pupil/teacher ratio to 9.6:1 from 9.7:1 in 2007. The weighted pupil/teacher ratio (with each sixth former counted as two) was 11.2:1, down from 11.3 in 2007. This compares to a ratio of 18.2:1 in maintained schools. The continuing fall in the pupil/teacher ratio not only indicates the importance of low classes sizes to parents but also reflects the determination of ISC schools to continue to teach a wide range of subjects even if uneconomic.
Teacher turnover, as a proportion of the number of full-time staff employed, remained relatively constant at 12.4%. A total of 2,116 teachers from maintained schools took up posts in ISC schools, while 597 moved from ISC schools into the maintained sector, giving a net gain of 1,519.
