Conference Summary
The 2007 ISC Annual Conference, held on 20th and 21st March 2007, started with a barnstorming opening address from Boris Johnson, the blond, tousle-haired Conservative Higher Education spokesman. Over the two days, more than 350 delegates heard nearly 50 speakers and session chairs from around the world. Anders Hultin from Sweden showed how innovative use of technology can take routine administrative burdens away from teachers - allowing them time for an individual progress meeting with every child each week. Harry Anthony Patrinos from the World Bank, Monique Rush from our sister organisation in the United States, and Robert Enlow from the Milton and Rose Friedman Foundation all gave insights into research, statistics and ideas from overseas. Still with an international theme, James Stanfield from Newcastle University demonstrated unintended consequences from overseas aid to Kenya.
Back in the UK, Rod Macdonald - Chairman and founding Partner of Buro Happold - was inspirational in demonstrating the social economic and environmental contribution of top quality engineering. Three leading universities - Bristol, Cambridge and Durham - sent their admissions directors to explain the ways in which they ensure a fair and balanced process to select the best candidates; and throughout the two days a strong legal theme was supported by authoritative presentations from leading practitioners. We were also delighted to welcome Dame Suzi Leather, Chair of the Charity Commission.
The conference was strongly supported by 17 sponsors and by more than 40 exhibitors. The 2008 ISC annual conference will take place at the Brewery, Chiswell Street, London EC1 on 3rd and 4th June 2008.
