Welcome from ISC's Chief Executive

Thank you for visiting the Independent Schools Council (ISC) website. This is your gateway to the services we provide for heads, bursars, governors, teachers, parents, the media and the public.

The ISC represents 1,280 independent schools educating more than 500,000 children. Our schools are inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI). The Head of each ISC school is normally a member of one of our Heads' Associations and most schools are also members of our Bursars' and/or Governors' associations.

ISC schools cover the entire academic range. They also cover a wide social range, with nearly a third of children receiving help with their school fees.

We want to help you find the information you need. For parents, there is a complete, searchable database of all ISC schools, with links to school websites. Our Frequently Asked Questions give guidance on choosing the right school for your child, on getting help with fees, and on sources of advice if your child has Special Educational Needs. If there are unanswered questions, please email us and we will try to help. We aim to respond to all enquiries within two working days.

The ISC Job Zone allows those interested in working in an independent school to search for job vacancies. Job specifications are available for the full range of jobs found in independent schools including teaching jobs, headships, heads of year or department and support staff.

If you are interested in teaching in an independent school and wish to find out more, then a teacher taster day could be very useful. Details of schools offering teacher taster days are available here.

Teachers who are about to qualify or are newly-qualified can find details of the ISC Teacher Induction Scheme. ISC's Teacher Induction Panel has the status of a Local Authority for inducting teachers.

Our Daily News section gives an archive of education news and our statistics section gives facts and figures about the sector. The website houses an archive of ISC press releases. Journalists can also contact our Press Office.

ISC staff also support the independent schools sector by representing it to Government and to the Media. We carry out authoritative research and statistical analysis to underpin that work, much of which is published in the ISC Bulletins. We run conferences and events, including a major annual conference, and annual Special Educational Needs and Marketing Conferences in November. I hope you find the site useful and well-presented. If you have comments or suggestions for improvement, please email us at website@isc.co.uk.
