Membership Information

The Independent Schools Council (ISC) has 1,280 member schools, covering the full age and ability range. ISC schools educate more than 500,000 children - this is more than 80% of the children in independent school education in the UK. All ISC schools are accredited in two related but distinct ways:

  • Before being accepted as an ISC member school, each school has to pass an accreditation inspection carried out by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) (England) or the national inspectorate (Wales, Scotland & Northen Ireland)
  • The Head of each ISC member school has to be a member of one of the five ISC Heads' Associations. These are:
o The Girls' Schools Association (GSA)
o The Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference (HMC)
o The Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS)
o The Independent Schools Association (ISA)
o The Society of Heads of Independent Schools (SHMIS)

Schools wishing to join ISC are invited to contact one or more of the Heads' Associations. Click here for a full list of contact details for ISC heads' associations.
