A select committee evidence session on allegations against teachers has revealed that some teachers have been banned from seeing their own children while claims they abused pupils are investigated. The NUT warned that teachers are becoming increasingly fearful of pupils making false allegations amid a “guilty until proven innocent culture”.

The Commons skills select committee has said that it has serious concerns that many sixth-formers would miss out on university places in September, as students are facing a scramble to get into higher education amid warnings of a further squeeze on places. The committee’s chairman, Phil Willis, last night wrote to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills to ask how they would meet the demand for higher education.
