Language degree review announced

England's higher education funding council (Hefce) has confirmed it will examine modern foreign language provision amid concern about university budget cuts. Several have had reduced funding for languages following an assessment of research by the funding council. The council (Hefce), said it was concerned about the health and sustainability of modern languages. The review will look at whether languages need to become more closely linked to research in other subjects.

Cases of diabetes in children 'will increase 70 per cent by 2020'

Britain faces an "accelerating epidemic" of childhood diabetes, with diagnosis in under-fives set to double by 2020, researchers report today. A review of trends in 17 countries in Europe shows that the rise is so rapid that environmental changes must lie behind it. Doctors believe these include the increase in Caesareans, reduced exposure to infections in early childhood and bottle feeding.
